Banking Services Exams in India

Indian Banking Sector in India is one of the vast Sectors, creating employments in thousands every year for the Indian Nationals. Banking jobs assure a decent pay scale, secured job opportunity and satisfying career prospects. Banking openings in India are available at different levels, from Bank Clerk to Probationary Officers. For this, they have to clear an examination popularly known as Banking PO Exams.

Banking Sector in India comprises of private banks and nationalized banks which conducts the exams for the recruitment of candidates for various positions through advertising in national news papers.

There are various Bank exams conducted every year for recruiting the competent candidates, among them prominent bank exams are mentioned hereunder:

1. Bank Clerical Grade Examination

State bank of India, shortly known as SBI, conducts Clerical Grade Examination which is generally held annually to recruit the clerical cadre personnel in State Bank of India and its associate banks. Not only the SBI but all other Nationalized Banks too conduct these clerical grade examinations through the banking services recruitment boards (BSRBs) by advertising through different national newspapers. These exams are conducted to recruit people in the following cadre:

  • Clerk
  • Typist (English)
  • Steno (English)
  • Agricultural Clerks
  • Steno (Hindi)
  • Typist (English and Hindi)
  • Steno (English and Hindi)
  • Clerk-cum-Cashier
  • Clerk-cum-Go down Keeper

Eligibility For Bank Clerical Grade Exam
The eligibility of candidates for appearing in the Bank clerical grade exam is explained here.

Age Limit For Bank Clerical Grade Exam
Not below 18 years and not above 28 years. Relaxation in upper age limit is as per rules for specified categories including SC/ST/OBC etc.

Nationality
A candidate must be either a citizen of India or one holding eligibility certificates issued by the Government of India.

Educational Qualification For Bank Clerical Grade Exam

1. For the posts of Clerks and Typists:
Bachelor's degree of a recognized University in any discipline or its equivalent recognized as such by the Central Government.
Passed with 50% marks in aggregate in Higher Secondary
Examination/(10+2) of 10+2+3 pattern/Eleventh Standard Examination of 11+3
pattern/Intermediate/Pre-University or its equivalent.
OR
Passed with 50% marks in aggregate in Diploma in Banking recognized by Central/State Government or U.T. Administration.
OR
Passed with 60% marks in aggregate in Matriculation/SSC (old pattern)/SSLC/ l0th standard of 10+2+3 pattern or equivalent.

2. For the posts of Stenographers, Data Entry Operators, Telephone Operators:
A pass in Matriculation/SSC (old pattern) SSLC/ l0th standard examination of 10+2+3 pattern or equivalent.

3. For the posts of Agricultural Clerks:
A degree or Diploma in Agriculture (including Agricultural Engineering) from a recognized University/Institution.
OR
Passed Higher Secondary/ 12th Standard of 10+2+3 pattern or Intermediate or equivalent examination with Agriculture as a subject with 50% marks for all candidates except SC/ST/OBC/XS/OBC/OH candidates in whose case the eligibility is a mere pass in these subjects.
OR
A Matriculation/SSC (l0th Standard) certificate in case of a Village Level Worker with a minimum of 3 years experience as Village level worker under a Government.

Other Qualifications Required For Bank Clerical Grade Exam
Applicants for the posts of Typists and Stenographers must have proficiency in Typing and Shorthand with the following minimum speed.

Hindi Typing - 25 wpm

English Typing - 30 wpm

Hindi Shorthand - 60 wpm in Hindi shorthand in addition to minimum Hindi Typing speed of 25 wpm

English Shorthand -80 wpm in English shorthand in addition to minimum English Typing speed of 30 wpm

Exam Pattern Of Bank Clerical Grade Exam

The Exam pattern of bank clerical Grade Exams such as State bank of India (SBI) and its associate Banks and other nationalized banks of India is explained in this page. Entrance examination involves two basic processes:

1. Written Test

2. Interview

1. Written Test For Bank Clerical Grade Exam

Part-I (Objective Type)
It will consist of four tests viz. Test of Reasoning, Test of English Language, Test of Numerical Aptitude and Test of Clerical Aptitude.

Part-II (Descriptive Type)
It will consist of Essay, Office correspondence, precise writing and arguments for or against a proposition to judge the candidate's ability to express his/her thoughts. The question Papers excepting the English Language Test of Part-I will be bi-lingual.

2. Interview for Bank Clerical Grade Exam
A candidate has to qualify in each of the Objective and Descriptive tests separately. Candidates qualifying in written examination would be called for an interview and a skill test in case of certain positions that demand a specific skill.

Syllabus For Clerical Grade Examination
The syllabus of Bank Clerical Grade Exams such as State bank of India (SBI) and its associate Banks and other nationalized banks of India is given for reference in this segment.

1. Test of Reasoning:
This test would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. The test may include questions on analogies, similarities, differences, space visualization, problem-solving, analysis, judgment, decision-making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, etc.

The test will also include questions designed to test the candidate's abilities to deal with abstract ideas and symbols and their relationships, arithmetical computation and other analytical functions.

2. Test of English Language:
This is a test to see how well you know English. English language ability would be tested through questions on grammar, vocabulary, sentence completion, synonyms, antonyms, comprehension of a passage, etc.

3. Test of Numerical Ability:
Questions will be designed to test the ability of arithmetical computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions and relationship between numbers. The questions would be based on arithmetical concepts and relationship between numbers and not on complicated arithmetical computations.

4. Test of Clerical Aptitude:
The questions in Clerical Aptitude will be set to test the candidate's perceptual accuracy and aptitude. This is the ability to notice similarities and differences between the pairs of names and numbers. Questions in Clerical Aptitude will also assess in addition to perceptual accuracy and aptitude, ability to handle office routine work like filing, abbreviating, indexing, etc.

5. Descriptive Papers:
It intends to measure your higher order cognitive abilities. Note: candidates have to pass each of the Objective and Descriptive Tests separately. It is a question paper-cum-answer sheet in Hindi and English and the Regional Language and you have to restrict your answers to the space provided on the answer-sheet. Use of supplements is not allowed.

Note: All the questions should be attempted in the same language.

For candidates appearing for the post of Agricultural Clerk, an objective test of Agricultural Knowledge (50 questions, 30 minutes) will also be there. In this test problems relating to Agricultural issues will be asked.

2. Reserve Bank Grade A/B Officers' Examination

Reserve Bank of India conducts Examination for the positions of grade A and grade B officers, every year by its Services Board named Reserve Bank of India Services Board, which functions at the following address.

The Reserve Bank of India Services Selection Board holds the examination in two phases. First Phase-Paper I (Objective Type) of three hours duration is held in the month of December. Second Phase (Descriptive Type) is conducted generally in the month of May in respect of those candidates who are successful' in Objective Type examination (Separately for each test) on the basis of standard prescribed by the Board. It consists of Paper II and Paper III.

  • Reserve Bank Grade A/B Officers' Examination is held every year generally in the month of December.

Eligibility For Reserve Bank Officers Examination

Educational Qualifications for Reserve Bank Officers Examination

  • A First Class Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 60% marks or an equivalent grade
    OR
    A Second Class Master's Degree with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade
    OR
    A Doctorate Degree with 50% marks in Master's Degree or equivalent grade
    OR
    Chartered/Cost Accountant/Company Secretary (ACS) with a Bachelor's Degree
    OR
    A Post Graduate Diploma from Management from IIM only.
  • SC/ST/PH candidates having second class with a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent grade in Bachelor's Degree examination OR having a Post-graduate Degree or equivalent recognized qualification, are eligible to apply.

Age Limit for Reserve Bank Officers Examination
Between 21 and 30 years. For candidates possessing MPhil/PhD qualification, upper age limit will be 31 and 33 years respectively. For candidates having experience as an officer in Commercial Bank/Financial Institution in Public Sector, upper age limit is relaxed to the extent of number of years of such experience subject to a maximum of three years. For such candidates, upper age limit should not exceed 33 years including experience. For experience, probationary period will not be reckoned.

Upper Age limit
Upper Age limit is relaxable by:

(a) 3 years in the case of OBC candidates.
(b) 5 years in the case of:

  • SC/ ST candidates
  • Ex-employees of banking institutions whose services had to be terminated for reasons of economy or as a result of bank going into liquidation and personnel retrenched from Government Offices after at least one year's service and applying through Employment Exchanges
  • Ex-servicemen (including Emergency Commissioned Officers/Short Service Commissioned Officers) provided applicants have rendered at least five years continuous Military Service and have been released on completion of assignment (including those whose assignment is due to be completed within one year) otherwise than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency or/on account of physical disability or have been released on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service or on invalidment
  • Emergency Commissioned Officers/Short Service Commissioned Officers who have completed their initial period of assignment of five years of Military Service but whose assignment has been extended beyond five years and in whose case the Ministry of Defence issues certificates that they would be released on selection within three months from the date of receipt of offer of appointment
  • Candidates who had ordinarily been domiciled in Kashmir Division of the State of Jammu and Kashmir between 1st January, 1980 and 31st December, 1989.

(c) 10 years for PH (Gen.); 13 years for PH (OBC) and 15 years for PH (SC/ST) candidate.

Exam Pattern Of Reserve Bank Officers Examination
The selection to the posts through Reserve Bank Officers Examination is done through Written Examinations followed by Interview.

Written exam will be held in two phases as under:

Phase I (Objective Type Test)
This Paper is of 3 hours duration for 200 marks.

The Paper comprises of four sections:
1. General Awareness
2. English Language
3. Quantitative Aptitude
4. Reasoning.
Candidates have to secure minimum marks separately for each test as prescribed by the Board.

Phase II (Descriptive Type Test)
The Phase II Examination will be conducted only for those candidates who are successful in Phase I (Objective Type Test). The date and time-table will be intimated to the candidates concerned. The Examination will consist of three Descriptive Type papers -

Paper I - English
Paper II - Economic and Social Issues and
Paper III - Finance and Management.

Each of these papers is of 3 hours duration carrying 100 marks.
Phase I (except the test of English) and Papers II and III of Phase II will be set bilingually in Hindi and English. Phase I is Objective Type and only marking the correct choice is required. However, Papers II and III of Phase II can be answered either in Hindi or English at the candidate's option.

A candidate has to qualify in each of the Descriptive Papers separately. Candidates will be short-listed for interview based on the aggregate marks obtained only in Phase II - Papers I, II and III. The minimum cut off marks for being short-listed will be decided by the Board in relation to the number of vacancies. Candidates may answer the Interview either in Hindi or English at their option. Final selection will be based on the performance of the candidate in Phase II of the written exam and Interview.

Candidates belonging to General Category, who had already appeared four times for Written Exam for post in the past, are not eligible to apply. No such restriction to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PH.

3. State Bank Probationary Officers' Examination

State Bank & Nationalized Banks Probationary Officers' Examination is held by Central Recruitment Board (State Bank Group) functioning at the address Madhuli, 2nd Floor, H/2 Shiv Nagar Estate, Dr. Annie Besant Road, Worli, Mumbai-400018, for recruitment of Probationary Officers in State Bank of India and its associates banks namely,

  • State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur
  • State Bank of Hyderabad
  • State Bank of Indore
  • State Bank of Mysore
  • State Bank of Patiala
  • State Bank of Suarashtra
  • State Bank of Travancore.

Candidates are permitted for only three attempts to write the Examination. This restriction will not apply in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC communities provided that they are otherwise eligible.

  • State Bank Probationary Officers' Examination is held every year, generally in the month of July.

Eligibility For State Bank Probationary Officers' Examination

Age Limit for State Bank Probationary Officers' Examination
Not below 21 years and not above 30 years as on1st July of the year of Exam.

Relaxation in Upper Age limit

  • SC/ST candidates by 5 years
  • OBC candidates by 3 years
  • Ex-servicemen, Commissioned officers, including those ECOs/SSOs who have rendered at least 5 years military service and have been released on completion of assignment.
  • All officers of regional Rural Banks who have put in a minimum continuous service of 5 years
  • Persons domiciled in the state of Jammu &Kashmir during the period 01.01.80 to 31.12.89
  • Orthopaedically /Visually handicapped candidates

Relaxation in upper age limit available to SC/ST/OBC candidates is allowed on cumulative basis with only one of the remaining categories for which age relaxation is permitted as mentioned above. Candidates seeking age relaxation are required to submit copies of necessary certificates along with the application .

Educational Qualification for State Bank Probationary Officers' Examination

  • General candidates and others - First division in Graduation in any discipline with 65% or more marks
  • SC/ST/Physically Handicapped Candidates - First Division in Graduation In any discipline with 60 % or more marks or
  • Degrees which are considered equivalent to graduation e.g. Chartered Accountant (CA), Cost Accountant (ICWA), Company Secretary (CS), as also qualifications in management like MBA / PGDBM, subject to fulfillment of criteria as regards division and marks as stipulated above.

In addition to above, Proficiency in computer and certificate of having completed training from a reputed institute is also essential.

Exam Pattern Of State Bank Probationary Officers' Exam
The exam pattern of SBI Probationary Officers' Recruitment Examination usually has two stages selection procedures, namely a Written Test and an Interview, as explained below:

Stage - I of Exam
Candidate will be called for an objective and descriptive type written Examination. Question paper will be in bilingual form. i.e. in Hindi and English except the test of English language. The Objective type examination will consist of:

  • Test of Reasoning (75 Questions and time suggested is 50 minutes)
  • Quantitative Aptitude (50 Questions and time suggested is 30 minutes)
  • General Awareness (50 Questions and time suggested is 25 minutes)
  • Test of computer literacy and English language (50 Questions and time suggested is 30 minutes).

It is important for all candidates to note that there will be negative marks for wrong answers. So total Number of questions asked is 225 and 135 minutes allotted for Objective Test. There will be negative marks for the wrong answers.

The descriptive type of test will consist of test of English language. Time allotted is 45 minutes. It serves to measure the candidate's higher order cognitive abilities such as comprehension and analysis of situations, generation of unique ideas or situations as well as language ability. Three out of four questions have to be answered on a given situation with answers to be restricted to the space provided in the question-cum-answer sheet. There will no negative marks for questions pertaining psychometric tests and in descriptive type examination.

Stage - II of Exam
The candidates who qualify on the basis of order of merit in the written examination as referred above will be called for group discussion and interview.
